Burj Al-Luqluq Social Center Society was established in the year 1991 and has been servicing the Jerusalem community within the Old City Walls for almost 21 years. It is named after governor Luqluq from the Mamluk period and built on almost 9 acres of land owned by two Palestinian families. In 1989, this area was threatened by Israeli presence with the desire to build a new settlement on the site. The inhabitants of the Old City were determined not to allow this to occur. This was the only piece of open space inside the Old City which was safe for their children to play and for adults to enjoy the outdoors. They formed a committee which right away declared the area a sports and social club upon which activities were started right away. Therefore, our Center has remained an integral part of society in the neighborhood called Bab Hutta. The Center is registered both with the Jerusalem municipality and the Union of Charitable Organizations in Jerusalem.
